About Korba

Korba is a beautiful city and also an industrial area in the Korba district in the newly formed state of Chhattisgarh. It is the power capital in Chhattisgarh state. Korba district is mostly inhabited by the tribals and falls under the Bilaspur division. The city of Korba has a very lush green forest cover where significant amounts of the tribal population are to be found. This particular city is has all the essential raw materials which are needed for power generation and hence is known as the Industrial hub of the state of Chhattisgarh.

There are four thermal power plants located in the city namely KSTPS (N.T.P.C), CSEB East, BCPP, CSEB West and these four together generate about 3650 MW of electricity. Apart from these, there is also a Hydro Electric Power Station which is located at Bango. Coal is available in plenty in this particular region and there is enormous profit earned by the coal companies situated here. In the year 1998, the district of Korba was rendered as a fully fledged revenue district. Korba city is located on the banks of the convergence of the rivers Ahiran and Hasdeo in this district of Korba.

Geography and Climate of Korba

Korba is located at 22.35 degree North latitude and 82.42 degree East longitude. The average elevation here is about 252 metres that is about 826 feet above sea level. The city of Korba is the center of the district of Korba in the newly formed state of Chhattisgarh. It is situated in the confluence of two rivers Ahiran and Hasdeo. Korba city is well known for a special variety of silk called “Kosa” which is used for producing the best quality clothes in the world. This particular silk makes the cloth light in weight and gives it a shinning glaze and is often used to make sarees, kurtas, shirts, salwar-suits and other garments for various occasions. This particular city is also famous for the Korva tribes.

The city of Korba experience a very dry and hot climate as it falls under the hot temperate climate zone. The summer season starts from the month of April to the mid of June month. The rainy season starts from the mid June till the end of September and is due to the south-west monsoon. The population of the city of Korba is approximately 3,65, 073 as per the 2011 census of which male population constitute of 52% and female population constitute of 48% of the overall population. This city is the 88th most populated city in the entire country and 4th in the entire state of Chhattisgarh. The average literacy rate here is 84.36% which is higher than the nation average that is 74.04%. Out of these, the male literacy is higher which is of 91.93% and the female literacy is of 76.17%.

The main inhabitants of this city are the tribes who constitute the majority of the population. Pahadi Korwa, Gond, Raj Gond, Kawar, Bhaiyana, Binjwar, Dhanuhar etc. are main tribal groups in the area. The main occupation of these tribes is agriculture. This region is also known for its various social and cultural diversities. The people living in this region celebrate festivals like Dussehra, Holi, Diwali and also Christmas. Apart from these the main adivasi festivals celebrated here include Pola, Dev Uthni, Cherchera, Hareli, Karma, etc. Also, the traditional dances of the tribes in this region include Rauat Nacha, Suva Nacha and Karma Nacha.
